Police Tighten Security for Onicha-Olona New Yam Festival

The Delta State Police Command has tightened security around Onicha-Olona Community ahead of its 2026 Annual New Yam Festival, warning that violence, cult activities and other criminal acts will not be tolerated during the celebration.

The festival is scheduled to hold from September 13 to 26, with the command deploying personnel to the festival grounds, major entry and exit routes, identified flashpoints and other strategic locations across the community.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, psc, mnips, also ordered the deployment of patrol and traffic teams to adjoining routes to regulate vehicular movement and ensure prompt response to incidents.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the Commissioner warned individuals and groups against using the festival as an opportunity to settle personal disputes, engage in reprisals or commit criminal acts.

The command said it would not tolerate fighting, cult-related activities, possession or use of firearms and other dangerous weapons, harassment, intimidation or any other act capable of disturbing public peace.

Erale urged residents and visitors to celebrate peacefully and cooperate with security personnel deployed for the event.

He also advised parents and guardians to keep proper watch over their children and wards, while motorists were urged to drive responsibly and comply with traffic directives.

The Commissioner called on members of the public to avoid confrontations and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, urging them to promptly report suspicious persons, threats or disturbances to the police.

He further appealed to traditional and community leaders, youths and other stakeholders to work with the police to ensure a peaceful celebration.

The Commissioner assured residents and visitors that personnel deployed for the festival had been directed to remain vigilant, professional and responsive throughout the celebration.
