Delta Police Arrest Six Suspected Cultists, Recover Four Firearms

The Delta State Police Command has arrested six suspected cultists in intelligence-led operations targeting suspected kidnappers and cultists in Ika South and Aniocha North Local Government Areas of the state.

The operations also led to the recovery of four firearms, six live cartridges, a battle axe, two cutlasses, mobile phones, suspected illicit drugs and military camouflage items, police said.

Police said operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit (SAKU), Sector III, Ubulu-Uku, arrested two suspected cultists during a covert operation at Alisheme Community, Ika South LGA, on September 18.

The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Destiny Okafor and 22-year-old Sunday Bryan.

The police said preliminary investigation showed that the suspects disclosed their membership of the NBM Confraternity and were suspected of involvement in cultism and kidnapping-related activities.

Police said the operatives recovered one locally fabricated single-barrelled gun, one battle axe, two cutlasses, mobile phones and a laptop from the suspects.

In a separate operation on September 15, the Divisional Police Officer, Issele-Uku Division, led a combined team of Police Anti-Cult personnel, vigilantes, hunters and Forest Security operatives in a cordon-and-search operation following intelligence on suspected cult activities around Ogboli Quarter and other parts of Issele-Uku.

The police said the operation resulted in the arrest of four suspected cultists and the recovery of two locally made pistols, one pump-action gun and six live cartridges.

Police also said operatives of the Command Anti-Cult Unit (CACU), Asaba, intercepted a Toyota Sienna conveying suspected illicit drugs and military accoutrements on September 18.

According to the police, the operatives had mounted surveillance along the route after receiving intelligence that the vehicle was travelling from Onitsha towards Ondo State.

The police said the vehicle, a green Toyota Sienna with registration number KP 527 AAA, was intercepted at about 4:50 a.m. and driven by 45-year-old Isaac Urji of Abia State.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of cartons of suspected Tramadol and other suspected illicit drugs, as well as military camouflage uniforms, boots and hats, police said.

The police said Urji was arrested and investigation had commenced to trace the source and intended destination of the items and identify other persons connected with the consignment.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, said the command would sustain intelligence-led operations against kidnapping, cultism and the proliferation of illegal firearms in the state.

He urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to the police, assuring them that such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
