NUJ Delta Commends Oborevwori Over Approval of 13th-Month Salary for Workers

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the payment of a 13th-month salary for public servants in the state, describing the decision as a landmark workers' welfare initiative.

The Union, in a statement jointly signed by the leadership of the Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and the Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, said the approval by the state Governor demonstrates his commitment to the welfare, motivation, and productivity of the state's workforce.

They thanked the Governor for approving the payment of a full month's salary as the 13th-month package, rather than the basic salary option adopted in some states.

According to the statement, "This landmark decision is another eloquent demonstration of the Governor's uncommon commitment to the welfare, motivation, and productivity of the Delta State workforce.

"It reflects a leadership style that recognises workers as indispensable partners in the delivery of good governance and sustainable development.

"The Council particularly applauds the Governor for approving the payment of a full month's salary as the 13th-month package, rather than the basic salary option adopted in some jurisdictions.

"This generous gesture underscores the administration's genuine concern for the economic well-being of workers and their families.

"Beyond its immediate financial value, the initiative will have far-reaching socio-economic benefits. Coming at the beginning of the year, the additional salary will provide much-needed financial stability for workers after the heavy expenditures associated with the Christmas and New Year celebrations. January, often regarded as a financially difficult month for many households, will no longer be approached with anxiety by Delta workers.

"Instead, they can begin the year with renewed confidence, meet essential family obligations, settle pressing financial commitments, and resume work with greater peace of mind and enthusiasm.

"This thoughtful intervention will also boost workers' morale, strengthen their purchasing power, stimulate economic activities across the state, and further deepen the cordial relationship between government and organised labour.

"A motivated workforce is invariably a more productive workforce, and this decision is expected to translate into improved service delivery across the public service.

"The NUJ Delta State Council believes this historic welfare package is consistent with Governor Oborevwori's people-oriented MORE Agenda and his administration's demonstrated commitment to prioritising the welfare of workers as a catalyst for development.

"It is also our expectation that local government councils will take a cue from the Governor's good example so that workers at that level of government will equally have a sense of belonging.

"On behalf of journalists in Delta State, we express our profound appreciation to His Excellency for this exemplary act of leadership and compassion.
