Delta Police Demotes Two Officers Over Extortion

The Delta State Police Command has demoted two police officers over extortion in Asaba after they were found guilty through a Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction conducted inside a police station.

The police in a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe said their demotion was followed an orderly room proceeding into the conduct of the two officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim of 'C' Division, Asaba who were captured in a viral video receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station on January 13, 2026.

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the orderly room trial, which found the officers guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

The statement said, "As part of the disciplinary measures, Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was demoted to the rank of Constable.

The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed zero-tolerance stance of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, against extortion and other forms of professional misconduct.

According to the CP, "the IGP has expressly prohibited the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations across the country, warning that no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise."

Oyeniyi stressed that any officer found violating the directive would face appropriate disciplinary action.

He urged officers and personnel of the command to uphold professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens, noting that the punishment imposed on the affected officers should serve as a deterrent to others.

The CP also reaffirmed the command's commitment to discipline, accountability and restoring public confidence in policing. He encouraged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through the Command's Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311.
