Delta Police Recovers 416 Rounds of Live Ammunition

The Delta State Police Command has said they have recovered a total of 416 rounds of live ammunition and 32 firearms following intelligence-led operations carried out between April 29 and June 29, 2026.

Addressing newsmen at the State Police Command Headquarters during the second-quarter press briefing in Asaba, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, said the Command, through proactive policing strategies targeting kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, drug trafficking and other violent crimes, recorded significant operational successes.
He disclosed that the Command recovered 197 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition and 219 live cartridges, bringing the total ammunition recovered during the period under review to 416 rounds.

The CP also added that officers recovered 32 firearms, including three AK-47 rifles, four pump-action guns, two Beretta pistols, two locally made revolver pistols, three cut-to-size firearms, 17 locally made single-barrel guns and one locally made double-barrel pistol.

In another operation, the CP said the Command also arrested two suspected kidnappers who allegedly emerged from a forest to buy food and medication after a failed kidnapping attempt.
He identified the suspects as Iliyasu Hassan, 16, and Idris Abdulkarim, 32. Both were arrested in Ughelli on June 22 following intelligence provided by local vigilantes.

The CP said the victims later identified them as members of the gang involved in an attempted abduction.

On homicide investigations, the police confirmed the arrest of Adedamola Michael Oyewole, 31, over the alleged murder of Habibatu Aruwa, a 21-year-old final-year law student of the University of Port Harcourt. The incident occurred in Warri on June 24 following what police described as a domestic dispute.

The Command also disclosed that the suspect in the murder of Bishop Chinedu Okonkwo was arrested in neighbouring Anambra State while attempting to sell the bishop's Toyota Land Cruiser. The suspect has since been charged to court.
Another raid on a criminal hideout known as Best Lodge in Oko Community resulted in the arrest of 14 suspected armed robbers and cultists. Recovered items included a locally made firearm, live cartridges, dangerous weapons, suspected Indian hemp, mobile phones and cash.

The CP also said the command arrested two suspected drug dealers in Amukpe, Sapele, recovering large quantities of controlled substances, including tramadol, codeine syrup, MDMA, Swinol, Tianeptine (Zaza) and other illicit drugs.

The Commissioner of police, however,assured residents that the Delta State Police Command remains committed to making the state hostile to criminals and safe for law-abiding citizens, urging members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies.
