NUJ, NESREA Seek Stronger Media Partnership for Environmental Sustainability

The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on Tuesday sought a stronger partnership for environmental sustainability in promoting sustainable development and environmental protection in the state.

Disclosing the purpose of the courtesy visit, the Delta State coordinator for the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Mr. Enoch Anyankpele, disclosed that the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency is saddled with the responsibility of enforcing environmental laws, regulations, and international environmental agreements in Nigeria.

He noted that the agency operates across all states of the federation through its various offices, ensuring that environmental standards are implemented in line with established guidelines across different sectors of the economy.

He said the agency has developed several regulations that guide various human activities and industries that impact the environment, adding that enforcement is only one part of the agency’s responsibilities.

The agency also places strong emphasis on public enlightenment and education, stressing that people must be properly informed about environmental laws before enforcement actions can be fully effective.

According to him, “the purpose of the visit to the NUJ Delta State Council was to engage key stakeholders in the media industry and seek their partnership in sensitizing the public on environmental protection, cleanliness, and compliance with regulations”.

“Journalists are critical partners in driving public awareness; the media plays a vital role in disseminating information that promotes behavioral change and environmental responsibility.”

He, however, assured that the agency remains open to receiving complaints from members of the public on environmental violations, including pollution, noise pollution, and infractions by individuals or companies.

Welcoming the NESREA delegation, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, along with the state treasurer, Caroline Ubini; auditor, Celestine Afokoba; and ex-officio, Christian Eze, gave assurances of the union's preparedness to partner with the agency in promoting sustainable development and environmental protection in the state.

Oyewe also noted that the Delta State NUJ council is made up of various chapels, which are under the supervision of the state council.

Comrade Oyewe said environmental protection remains central to human survival and must be protected in return to ensure long-term sustainability.

In his words, "Failure to properly manage the environment would have serious consequences, as both humans and other living organisms depend on it for survival."

“Humans are not the sole owners of the environment; plants, and animals also share in its existence and must be protected.”

Oyowe assured NESREA of the union's readiness to collaborate with the agency in creating awareness and promoting environmental responsibility among the public."
