The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday formally affirmed former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential flag bearer for the 2027 general election at a Special National Convention attended by party leaders, delegates, and stakeholders from across the country.

The affirmation followed the unanimous adoption of a motion and resolution by delegates at the convention, signaling the party’s endorsement of Obi as its candidate for the nation’s highest office.

National Leader of the NDC and serving Senator, Henry Seriake Dickson, who presented the party’s flag to Obi alongside the National Chairman, described the exercise as a reflection of the confidence and trust reposed in the former governor by party members and Nigerians.

“It was an honour and privilege, in the company of the National Chairman and other leaders of our party, to affirm His Excellency Peter Obi as the NDC Presidential Flag Bearer of our great party,” Dickson said.

He added: “This affirmation is not merely a party exercise; it is a reflection of the confidence, trust, and hope that members of our party and millions of Nigerians have reposed in the NDC.”

In a major highlight of the convention, Obi, while accepting the party’s nomination, announced former Kano State Governor and ex-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

The announcement was greeted with loud applause and enthusiasm from delegates, who viewed the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as a significant step towards national unity, inclusiveness, and effective leadership.

Congratulating both leaders, Dickson described the development as a historic milestone for the party and pledged total support for the ticket.

“I congratulate both His Excellency Peter Obi and His Excellency Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on this historic milestone and assure them of the full support of the leadership, members, and stakeholders of our party as we work collectively towards a successful campaign and victory at the polls,” he stated.

The former Bayelsa governor also commended delegates, party officials, and members nationwide for their orderly conduct throughout the primary elections and convention process.

“I thank our delegates, party officials, and members across the country for the peaceful and democratic manner in which they conducted themselves throughout the primary elections and the convention process. Let us remain united, focused, and committed to the ideals upon which our party was founded,” Dickson said.

He expressed optimism about the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 elections, urging members to remain steadfast in their commitment to providing Nigerians with a credible alternative.

“Together, we shall offer Nigerians a credible alternative and usher in a new era of hope, progress, and national renewal,” he declared.

The convention marks a significant milestone in the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the party positioning the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as its platform for national transformation and inclusive governance.
