Mutu Discontent: Mass Defection to NDC Looms in Bomadi/Patani, Bomadi APC Stalwart, John Feh, Raises Alarm

In what appears to be a rising discontent at the lopsidedness surrounding the 7 tenure occupation of the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency seat by Hon. Nicholas Mutu since 1999, a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Bomadi local government, Hon. John Feh, has raised alarm concerning an imminent mass defection of APC members from the federal constituency to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Warning that this impending political tsunami “is not a routine political shift, but a systemic signal of discontent”, the Bomadi APC stalwart expressed concern that if not addressed promptly , the looming mass defection could fundamentally alter the political balance of the constituency and beyond.

Excerpts of Hon. Feh's warning to stakeholders in the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency are produced verbatim below:

*Have an Urgent and Strategic Intervention in Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency or Risk Mass Defections to the National Democratic Congress.

The Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency is approaching a critical tipping point that demands immediate and strategic intervention. Emerging political developments indicate a high likelihood of mass defections from the ruling political structure to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), driven by growing dissatisfaction among key stakeholders and grassroots supporters.

This is not a routine political shift. It is a systemic signal of discontent that, if not addressed promptly, could fundamentally alter the political balance of the constituency and beyond. The situation calls for decisive, fair, and forward-looking action by the Delta State Government and all relevant stakeholders to preserve democratic stability and public confidence.

At the core of this looming mass defection is a deep and sustained dissatisfaction with the quality of legislative representation over nearly three decades. Honourable Nicholas Mutu, having occupied the office for approximately 28 years, is widely perceived to have delivered limited measurable impact: no clearly identifiable sponsored bills, motions, or constituency-driven legislative interventions. Beyond this, concerns persist regarding the absence of a functional constituency office and limited engagement with the people.

Representation, in its true sense, requires visibility, accessibility, and tangible outcomes; where these are lacking over such an extended period, public frustration becomes inevitable.

Compounding this dissatisfaction is the growing perception that Honourable Mutu's continued occupancy of the office has been sustained largely through political patronage rather than performance or competitive democratic processes. Indications that such patronage may still influence future candidacy decisions have further heightened tensions within the constituency.

For many stakeholders, this reinforces a belief that the political space is not sufficiently open, thereby weakening confidence in internal democratic mechanisms and fueling the current momentum toward collective political realignment.

The implication is clear: what is unfolding is not an isolated protest or individual grievance, but a coordinated shift of political allegiance driven by a demand for fairness, inclusion, and credible representation. A mass defection of this nature would significantly alter the political equation within the constituency, weaken existing party structures, and create avoidable instability ahead of the 2027 elections.

More importantly, it signals a broader erosion of trust that, if left unaddressed, may extend beyond Bomadi/Patani and impact the wider political environment in Delta State.

In light of these realities, urgent and strategic intervention is imperative. The Delta State Government and relevant stakeholders must act swiftly to restore confidence by ensuring transparent, inclusive, and credible political processes—particularly in candidate selection. Engagement with key actors, acknowledgment of legitimate grievances, and a demonstrable commitment to fairness will be critical in reversing the current trajectory.

The choice is stark: respond decisively to the voice of the people now, or contend with the far-reaching consequences of mass political defection later.

Hon. John Feh,
APC Stalwart, Bomadi LGA
