Awhefeada takes over at SDU , Ozoro, promises to make it model and pacesetting 21st century University

The new Vice Chancellor , the second , of Southern Delta University, Ozoro , in Isoko North Local Government Area , Professor Sunny Awhefeada , has promised to elevate the institution into "a model and pacesetting 21st century University".

He equally pledged to build on the legacies of the Pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University , Professor Jacob Oboreh , whom he commended for laying a firm foundation for the University's current growth and development both in academics, infrastructure , and industrial harmony , among others.

Professor Awhefeada gave the assurance at the formal handing over to him by Professor Oboreh at the Vice Chancellor's Conference Hall of the institution , on Monday May 4th , 2026.

According to the Southern Delta University, Ozoro's second Vice Chancellor, "Take it to the bank. You can verify . We did that magic when l was Dean of Faculty of Arts at Delta State University , Abraka. We also did so for the two years l was Dean of Post graduate Studies at same DELSU, Abraka, and we are going to replicate that in Southern Delta University , Ozoro".

The new Vice Chancellor has earlier commended immediate past Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, for his vision in setting up three State Universities in one fell swoop , describing the former Governor as "a man who saw tomorrow".

He particularly paid glowing tributes to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for converting the University from a Science and Technology based institution, to a conventional University , an action that made him , a Professor of Humanities , qualify to apply for the position of Vice Chancellor .

Said an emotional Awhefeada : "Most of you will not know that but for that singular action of Governor Oborevwori, Sunny Awhefeada would not have been able to apply because he is a Professor of Humanities , not Science and Technology , which has no place for the Humanities. By changing the nomenclature of "Delta State University of Science and Technology to something holistic and conventional, with a Campus at Orerokpe , l was then qualified to apply".

Earlier in his handing over speech, outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Jacob Snapps Oboreh who traced the establishment of the institution from the defunct Delta State Polytechnic , Ozoro, noted that the University has experienced growth in leaps and bounds.

He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the many legacy projects including the introduction of the School of Medical Sciences as well as the approval for a Campus of the institution at Orerokpe , Okpe local government , where academic activities have commenced for the 2025/2026 Academic session in various disciplines of Management Sciences abd Arts among others.

Oboreh urged his successor to urgently look into the construction of more hostel accommodation, staff residence on campus , as well as procurement of basic medical equipment for the Faculties of Basic Medical Science, Engineering and Environmental Sciences, for the purpose of teaching and research.

Highpoint of the event was the formal presentation of the handover note by Professor Oboreh, to his successor , Professor Awhefeada.

Top management of SDU, DELSU academic community led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor , Professor Douglas Omotor, heads of other tertiary institutions in the state , the traditional chiefs from Orogun , family and well wishers of the new Vice Chancellor,among others, graced the occasion.
