By Felix Evwihor
The Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening vocational education as the maiden edition of the Delta State Secondary School Cooking Competition was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Women Affairs Secondary School, Asaba.
Dr. Ashibogwu, who was represented at the event by the Functioning Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Patricia Iniovosa-Okakwu, described the competition as a strategic initiative aimed at promoting creativity, teamwork, healthy living, and talent development among secondary school students.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner, Mrs. Iniovosa-Okakwu said cooking is more than the preparation of meals, describing it as an art, a science, and a vital life skill.
She noted that the competition provided an avenue for students to display creativity, innovation, and cultural heritage through the preparation of nutritious traditional meals.
According to her, the initiative was also designed to help bridge gaps within families created by the increasing economic pressures on parents, by productively engaging students and nurturing their talents. She commended participating schools, principals, teachers, parents, and students for their collective contributions to the success of the event.
Dr. Ashibogwu praised the selection process, noting that although only two students represented each school from a large pool of learners, the participants demonstrated diligence, discipline, and commitment.
He particularly acknowledged parents for their role in nurturing and supporting the students, stressing that while winners would emerge at the end of the competition, all participants were winners for acquiring valuable life skills and exposure.
