The Delta State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Onoriode Agofure, has urged motorists in the state to drive safely and obey traffic rules and regulations in the festive celebration.
Agofure made the call during an interview in Asaba while highlighting Governor Oborewvori's and the ministry's achievements in the outgoing year and the ministry's plans for the incoming year.
Highlighting the ministry's achievements, the Commissioner said, The State Governor has done marvelously well and beat all expectations in terms of road infrastructure, human development, health, education—in fact, all sectors of the state—and the records are there to speak for themselves.
He maintained that his ministry, the Directorate of Transport, has recorded numerous gains through the approvals that His Excellency has graciously given to them.
He explained that "One such approval was the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system (ANPR), a technology that has helped in cutting-edge ways and has been used to apprehend road users who violate traffic rules and regulations.
He said the ANPR is basically cameras that have been set up at different parts of the state at different locations to single out vehicle users who have contravened road violations such as driving above specified speed limits.
Agofure also noted that the ANPR also captures cars that have not renewed their vehicle particulars in the database system and that automatic messages will be sent to them to pay their fine, likewise reminding them to go and renew their vehicle papers.
He said, “The beauty of this technology (ANPR) is that it helps reduce the confrontation between road users and also enforcement agencies.”
“ We are trying to see how we can use innovative and cutting-edge technology to be able to drive the policies of His Excellency's agenda."
"The ANPR is also very good technology in terms of security, which is part of the state governor's mantra, “ peace and security.'" Because if there are any security issues that arise and the vehicles pass through where these cameras are, they can be easily identified and the information can be shared with security operatives."
"Also, the state also gave an approval for the construction of a lot of jetties in the riverine areas to boost connectivity between the riverine areas and the land transportation.”
“Another success that we have also recorded is His Excellency graciously approved the renovation of VIO offices across the state, and that helps to boost morale and to provide a conducive working environment for our VIO officers.”
"And we are also building.a chief driver's training school here in Asaba.where all the drivers that are attached to various MDAs go there to take training and lessons and also help them upgrade in terms of career progression."
